What is in it

Stars of the Milky Way from ESA's Gaia DR3 (1.8 billion sources): positions, parallaxes (distances), proper motions, G/BP/RP photometry and colours, radial velocities. Good for colour–magnitude (HR) diagrams, star clusters, stellar kinematics and the local stellar population. Keyless; at most 50,000 rows per load (anonymous archive quota). Non-commercial licence (CC BY-NC 3.0 IGO).

In e2er's words, from the source's definition.

The data stay with the source

The terms of Gaia allow non-commercial use only, with credit to ESA/Gaia/DPAC (CC BY-NC 3.0 IGO). A published study does not pass these data on: publishing asks the researcher to confirm the terms, and the study's code loads the data again from the source (get_data.py). A reader who asks the authors for the data is sent to the source.

Terms of use for the data

  • Gaia data are distributed under the CC BY-NC 3.0 IGO licence.
  • Free to use with credit to ESA, Gaia DPAC (the acknowledgement sentence).
  • Any commercial use needs ESA's authorisation first (data.licences@esa.int).
  • Cite the Gaia mission paper (2016) and the Gaia DR3 summary paper (2023).

The terms as e2er records them

CC BY-NC 3.0 IGO (https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nc/3.0/igo/). The Gaia licence page (https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/gaia-users/license): "Gaia data are distributed under the CC BY-NC 3.0 IGO license." The ESA archives' terms (https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/esdc/terms-and-conditions): data "are open and free to use by the User subject to proper acknowledgment to be given in accordance with the credit lines provided below" (Gaia: "Credit: ESA, Gaia DPAC"), and "Prior to any commercial use by the User of any Data or Data Product, including any use or application that directly or indirectly generates a financial gain, a detailed request for authorisation/licence shall be made". Acknowledgement: This work has made use of data from the European Space Agency (ESA) mission Gaia (https://www.cosmos.esa.int/gaia), processed by the Gaia Data Processing and Analysis Consortium (DPAC, https://www.cosmos.esa.int/web/gaia/dpac/consortium). Funding for the DPAC has been provided by national institutions, in particular the institutions participating in the Gaia Multilateral Agreement.

Technical details

Code in e2er: src/modules/data/sources/gaia.py

  • e2er-data gaia cone: Gaia DR3 sources around a point, e.g. --ra 56.75 --dec 24.12 --radius 1 --max-mag 15 (the Pleiades).
  • e2er-data gaia query: Any ADQL SELECT on the Gaia archive (gaiadr3.gaia_source, gaiadr3.astrophysical_parameters, …), e.g. --adql "SELECT TOP 1000 source_id, bp_rp, phot_g_mean_mag FROM gaiadr3.gaia_source WHERE parallax > 50".
